Updates for December 2024 to The Pipe Organ in China Project Website:
First, we would like to wish all our friends and visitors a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year of 2025, and from 29 January, the Year of the Snake.
新年快樂
We received some nice photos and the specs for PEK2004b this month from our friend, Andy Ng, of the Hong Kong chapter of the AGO. This clarifies a lot about this mysterious organ, which we have been trying to document for over a decade. Thanks, Andy!
We also received a photo of the High Altar of the Nantang in Beijing from the 1950s. The ‘South Church’ was the only Roman Catholic church open in Beijing after 1949, largely for the use of the foreign and diplomatic community. It is quite interesting to be able to observe how the old Tridentine rite continued to be celebrated there, up to the cataclysmic year of 1966.
Finally, in response to a request for information last month, we received definitive word on the fate of the Sony/Yamaha bamboo organ in Tokyo. Installed in the lobby of the old Sony Building in Ginza, it was dismantled in 1976 and discarded.
