Updates for November 2024

30 November 2024

There were no updates posted for October, partly due to Prof. Urrows’ stay in Malta.

In early November a blog post by Prof. Urrows was posted on the topic of the first performance of Bach’s B Minor Mass in China (as far as known). This took place in Shanghai in June 1934, and should conclusively put to rest the false claim that it was only heard for the first time in Beijing in 1999.

The page for HKG1973 has been updated.

Although not an organ in China, we have to report that the Yamaha Bamboo Organ of 1966 appears to have been dismantled in 1975-76. What happened to it after that, is at present unknown. The 1966 Sony Building in Tokyo, for which it was commissioned, was torn down in 2017, and replaced by an architectural horror that was only finished this summer. If anyone has any information about the fate of the Sony Building’s Bamboo Organ after 1976, please use the Contact Us page to let us know.
