Another article on organ works by composers of Asian descent has appeared in June issue of The American Organist: Zoe Lei, “Contemporary East Asian Organ Repertoire: An Analysis of Select Pieces”, TAO 58/6, pp. 52-58 (based on material in her recent University of Michigan doctoral dissertation.) This article discusses works by Chinese-American organist/composer Chelsea Chen, and Hong Kong-based composers Alvin Tam Lok-hei, and Alfred Wong Hok-Yeung.
Dr. Lei was a student of Project founder Prof. David Francis Urrows at Hong Kong Baptist University prior to her move to postgrad studies in the USA.
The page for HCH2018a has been updated.
The Project was very pleased to hear from Peter Jones, British organ builder working on the Isle of Man, who turns out to be the grandson of Austin Jones, the principal monteur of SHA1925 – the large III/45 Harrison & Harrison organ installed after the First World War in Holy Trinity Cathedral, Shanghai. Further details about the work of Austin Jones and his brother Doyley in Republican-era China, can be found in Chapter 5 of Keys to the Kingdom. We look forward to hearing more from Mr. Jones about this remarkable connection.
Finally, as summer ends, enjoy the amusing Facebook ‘translation’ below, of an organ stoplist from The Netherlands that appeared online recently. This is one of those things that organist Hans Uwe Hielscher would have put into his old Die heitere Orgel column.
