HKG1986, built for the newly-opened Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, was Rieger’s re-entry into the China market since the firm’s last installation half a century earlier in Ichowfu (today’s Linyi) in 1936 (see ICF1936).
The specs of the 1986 organ may be accessed at: http://www.rieger-orgelbau.com/details/project/Hong_Kong_Academy/?lang=en
This installation was one of the results of a contract offered by the Hong Kong government to British organist Geraint Jones (1917-98) Between 1982 and 1986 Jones was hired as a consultant for the installation of an organ in the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, eventually completed eight years later (see HKG1989). At this time, he was also asked to draw up the specs for HKG1986. Jones then played the dedicatory recital on HKG1986 himself on 17 October 1986.
